May We Introduce You To: Psychology Today Therapy Directory
by Lee Gehrls R&D Coordinator (Volunteer)
For some time now we have all heard on the news how difficult it can be to find mental health providers. And if you do find a therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist who takes your insurance you may then be told they have a long waiting list or they are not accepting new clients. It helps if you have a resource to go to that might help with your searching, a directory on mental health care providers like the Psychology Today Therapy Directory which is on the publication Psychology Today website and is copyrighted by Sussex Directories, Inc.
Now there are a few things to keep in mind when you use any directory:
- There are other directories that can give you listings of mental health care providers, medical providers, or support services on ADHD and related conditions.
- All of the directories that we have used, recommended, or reviewed to date have been free to consumers. Professional directories may charge the provider to have a listing. We are not aware of any mental health care directory (or medical or support service directory) that charges us, the consumer, a fee to browse the listings.
- No directory is a complete listing of all the mental health care providers in your area. Therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists choose to list their practices in a directory. This applies to medical and support services too.
- Directories can be a helpful tool in your search for therapy options (or medical providers and support services). However, we strongly recommend that you do your research and consult and interview providers to determine their ability to meet your specific needs.
Psychology Today Therapy Directory
To get to the directory go to the Psychology Today website and the search box is right there on their Homepage. The directory is easy to use and gives you quite a bit of information on each listing. You can tailor the search to your specific area and search for therapists, online therapy, psychiatrists, treatment centers, and support groups. You can do further searching by issues, insurance provider, gender, types of therapy, age, and price, and under more options you can look at ethnicity served, sexuality, language, and faith.
After you get your listing of therapists or psychiatrists you will learn about their contact information and office location, a brief summary of the issues they treat or their specialty area(s) of treatment, their hourly rate, the insurance they accept, if they provide in-person and online therapy or just online therapy, and if they are accepting new clients or have a waiting list. The listing also tells you to verify that they take your insurance when you call or email them. Some of the listings say you may call or email them with questions and others say you may call or email them for a free 15-minute consultation.
Lastly, the website also provides the option for each provider to make a 15-second video where they can make a short presentation that tells you a bit about themselves and their practice.
As you can see each listing provides a fair amount of information that can help in your search for a therapist or psychiatrist. The listings for treatment centers and support groups are similar. I encourage you to check out this resource to get a feel for how it works and then you can determine if it is an option you want to add to your ADHD toolbox.
