We are beginning a New Year and I have a new expert to introduce to you who specializes in Executive Functions in the neurodiverse population. Seth Perler has a M.Ed. in Gifted and Talented Education and Special Education, is an Executive Function Coach, advocate, speaker, and a creative content creator for those with ADHD, ASD, 2e or ‘twice exceptional,’ and other neurodiverse challenges. He describes his mission in the following way: “Give you (compassionate & proactive parents, educators, therapists) honest, practical and unconventional approaches to helping complicated, struggling students, without b.s. or misinformation. And teach the world about Executive Function, which is at the root of student struggles.” He considers this his life’s work to help young people and their families, educators, and others to overcome Executive Function challenges.

Seth’s website – sethperler.com – is packed with information about educating and supporting students, parents, teachers, and professionals. It’s not a website you can breeze through – it will take some time to review so be sure to pace yourself to prevent becoming overwhelmed. Each section has detailed explanations and some will include short videos to further help you understand the material. I recommend that you begin with his biography, which is a 7-minute read where he describes himself as “that kid” – you know, the one that didn’t pay attention or sit still or focus. Seth shares how he was described as being “easily distracted,” or “short attention span,” or “slow worker,” or “never gets work done.” He takes you through his total school experience from elementary through college. He describes how he struggled and failed, how he decided to ask for help, when he realized what he was good at and what made him happy, and finally success when he figured out how to turn his strengths into a career and success.
