May We Introduce You To: APSARD Members Stephen V. Faraone, Ph.D. & David W. Goodman, M.D.

Stephen V. Faraone and David W. Goodman are active members of the American Professional Society of ADHD and Related Disorders (APSARD) and work to improve the treatment and education for those who live with ADHD and improve training for clinicians who work with this special population. They are actively involved in the formulation of the upcoming, first-ever United States Adult ADHD Guidelines which are to be published in the later part of 2024. APSARD and the future adult ADHD guidelines were featured in our March 2023 issue of our free Positive Steps newsletter.

Stephen V. Faraone, Ph.D.

Stephen Vincent Faraone, Ph.D., is an American psychologist whose work has focused heavily on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and related disorders. Dr. Faraone began his career in psychiatric genetics at the Harvard Department of Psychiatry. He later transferred to SUNY Upstate Medical University, where he is a Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and of Neuroscience and Physiology. Dr. Faraone is the President of the World Federation of ADHD in Switzerland and has published over 700 articles, editorials, chapters, and books. In 2013, he was the most frequently cited author in psychiatry and psychology in the United States and the world’s third most cited researcher in those fields, according to Microsoft Academic Search. In 2002 CHADD inducted Dr. Faraone into their CHADD Hall of Fame for his efforts in diagnosing and treating attention disorders.

Dr. Faraone heads the ADHD Evidence Project, which provides curated evidence about ADHD to health and mental healthcare professionals and the public. He is also an ADHD expert and web content advisor for ADHD in Adults, which educates others about adult ADHD. Dr. Faraone’s research has received financial support from the US National Institute of Health, the EU, and the pharmaceutical companies Otsuka, Shire/Takeda, Ironshore, McNeill, Jannsen, and Supernus. He holds a US patent for treating ADHD using sodium-hydrogen exchange inhibitors.

David W. Goodman, M.D.

David W. Goodman, M.D.

David W. Goodman, M.D. is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is also the Director of the Adult Attention Deficit Disorder Center of Maryland in Lutherville and the Director of Suburban Psychiatric Associates, LLC. Dr. Goodman is a full-time clinical practitioner focused on the diagnosis and treatment of mood disorders, adult ADHD, and anxiety disorders and has served as a teacher of psychiatric residents at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

An internationally recognized authority on adult ADHD, Dr. Goodman is the author of 30+ peer-reviewed science articles and the lead author on the largest adult ADHD trial published and the largest survey assessment of adult ADHD physician clinical practice. He has provided over 600 lectures to health and mental health practitioners and specialists. Dr. Goodman served as a Principal Investigator for multi-site Phase II and III drug trials used in treating ADHD and major Depression. His comments have been featured in the news media across the US, and he has served as an ADHD consultant for Major League Baseball and the National Football League.

Dr. Goodman is a former board member of Children and Adults with ADHD (CHADD), a contributor to ADDitude Magazine, and a member of ADDitude’s ADHD Medical Review Panel. He is the director of the Adult Attention Deficit Disorder Center of Maryland, which is dedicated to providing expert, evidence-based psychiatric care for adults with ADHD. Dr. Goodman is also the founder and director of My ADHD Foundation, which is an organization founded to advance accurate and factual diagnosis and treatment of ADHD through research and education, advocacy, and the care of patients.
