Reading Time: 4 Minutes
This month, I would like to introduce you to another expert in the field of ADHD who you might not be as familiar with as some of the other established ADHD professionals. J. Russell Ramsay, PhD, ABPP, is a board-certified cognitive-behavioral therapist and psychologist specializing in the assessment and psychosocial treatment, specifically Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), of adult ADHD. In 2023, he retired as a professor of clinical psychology in the psychiatry department at the Perelman School of Medicine, where he was co-founder and co-director of UPenn’s Adult ADHD Treatment and Research Program. Currently, Dr. Ramsay has established his independent virtual practice.
Dr. Ramsay The Author
Dr. Ramsay is the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles and six books covering various aspects of adult ADHD. He is known for his book The Adult ADHD Toolkit and his most recent book, The Adult ADHD and Anxiety Workbook. The Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies has designated The Adult ADHD Toolkit a recommended self-help book. It has been translated into Spanish, French, Korean, and English and is currently being translated into German.
Dr. Ramsay The Professional
Besides his virtual practice, Dr. Ramsay is very busy traveling the world, speaking, and conducting interviews on the many different aspects of ADHD. He maintains associations with various ADHD organizations such as ADDitude, CHADD, ADDA, CADDRA, and the ADHD Federation. He is an inductee into the CHADD Hall of Fame and received the University of Pennsylvania’s Szuba Award for Excellence in Clinical Training & Research. He also serves as a member of the ADDitude ADHD Medical Review Panel and on the editorial board of the Journal of Attention Disorders. He is frequently sought out to review other journals. Dr. Ramsay serves as co-chair of the Professional Advisory Board of ADDA and on the Professional Advisory Board of the Bucks County, PA chapter of CHADD.
APSARD Guidelines
He is also a member of the American Professional Society of ADHD and Related Disorders (APSARD). APSARD is the organization that has written the first-ever Adult ADHD Guidelines in the US. It is currently in the final review process with the new guidelines, which will be published in late 2025. Dr. Ramsay is not directly involved in crafting the guidelines, but APSARD is collaborating with CHADD to promote and distribute the guidelines in 2025. Dr. Ramsay is involved on CHADD’s side, serving as the psychologist on the team who will take the guidelines and turn them into clinical toolkits for different professions.
