Welcome to October and National ADHD Awareness Month! This is the time of year when national ADHD organizations, experts on ADHD, and local and state organizations that work with those who have ADHD and other disabilities make an extra effort to educate and dispel the rumors and myths that still exist. You will probably notice that ADHD will be featured on many media outlets and in print material all month long.

Kids and adults who are gifted (also called 2e) can also have ADHD and learning differences. This month, I want to introduce you to Julie Skolnick, M.A., J.D., the founder of With Understanding Comes Calm, LLC. This organization educates and supports parents of ‘Twice Exceptional (2e)’ children. Julie defines ‘Twice Exceptional’ as a ‘person who is identified as gifted with learning differences’ on the Home page of her website. She has been a speaker at numerous national conferences such as ADHD Women’s Palooza, ADHD Parent Palooza, Autism Summit, and Breakthroughs in 2e Education, to name a few of her past speaking events. Julie has had leadership roles in organizations that address the gifted community’s needs in her home state of Maryland. She trains educators about 2e individuals, mentors 2e adults, and advises clinicians on how they can best support their clients. And she knows from life experience the challenges this population faces as she is a parent to three twice exceptional children.

As with many of these websites, they offer a mix of free information, fee-for-service consulting, and program options. If you decide on a fee-for-service option, be sure to do your research.

Her website is packed with many learning options that are free or for a fee. Here is a brief overview of the information you will find on her website:

You will also find detailed information on the G&D Book Study for Educators, information on her future The Gifted and Distractible course, the Let’s Talk 2e Conference series, which features an individual conference for adults, educators, and parents, and The Haystack. This membership group offers a community for 2e adults to share and learn. There is a membership fee, and registration is open at certain times of the year.

I encourage you to take some time to explore this website during National ADHD Awareness Month, which will allow all of us to expand our knowledge and understanding of this neurodivergent group. October gives all of us the opportunity to come together to offer support and understanding to everyone in our ADHD community and to carry positive messages forward that those with ADHD, along with another disorder or who have a different way of learning, can lead successful and fulfilling lives.
