In the August newsletter, you may recall that I introduced or reintroduced you to the ongoing work of Dr. David Goodman and the organizations he founded to promote education and research on ADHD, benefiting families and his international colleagues. This month, I would like to follow the same format for Stephen Faraone, PhD, and introduce you to the three organizations with which he is involved, which focus on the treatment and education of ADHD.
About Dr. Faraone
Stephen Vincent Faraone, Ph.D., is an American psychologist whose work has focused heavily on attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and related disorders. Dr. Faraone is the President of the World Federation of ADHD in Switzerland and has published over 1,000 articles, editorials, chapters, and books. He also heads the ADHD Evidence Project, which provides curated evidence about ADHD to health and mental healthcare professionals and the public. Dr. Faraone is an ADHD expert and web content advisor for ADHD in Adults, which educates others about adult ADHD.
You may remember I first mentioned Dr. Faraone in the April 2024 issue of our Positive Steps newsletter, where he was featured alongside Dr. David Goodman, who was the subject of the August Issue of Positive Steps.
The World Federation of ADHD
The World Federation of ADHD was founded in 2007 in Wurzburg, Germany, at the first International Congress. It is an organization that unites professionals and their regional ADHD allies across the world to improve education on ADHD and advocate for both the patients and the families of those with ADHD. Their goals include:
- Spreading knowledge about ADHD.
- Encouraging research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of ADHD.
- Creating and advocating for public policy that favorably impacts ADHD patient care.
- Exchanging information between scientific and healthcare professionals, health experts, ADHD organizations, self-help groups, and the public.
- Collaborating with other professionals and organizations whose issues relate to ADHD.
Their website features sections with information on the annual World ADHD Congress and their meetings, publications put out by the organization (such as the World Federation ADHD Guide), a membership page allowing one to become involved with the organization, and a section featuring ADHD news relating to the organization, and a link to subscribe to their newsletter.
The ADHD Evidence Project
The ADHD Evidence Project, headed by Dr. Faraone, aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with ADHD by curating, disseminating, and promoting scientifically verified, evidence-based information about ADHD to patients, families, and experts. They curate the International Consensus Statement, which is a ‘living document’ on ADHD through systematic assessment of scientific literature to find studies that reach their high standards of evidence. They also feature blogs based on new science publications and other crucial information concerning ADHD. Their future work involves promoting the International Consensus on social media to professional ADHD organizations and advocacy groups that support patients with ADHD and their families. They also have a section on various ADHD resources, including:
ADHD in Adults – Evidence-Based Education on ADHD in Adults
Describing itself as being developed ‘by Clinicians for Clinicians’, ADHD in Adults pursues the education of the public and healthcare professionals about Adult ADHD. The website provides evidence-based research in an online learning format, featuring numerous educational resources. The content is constantly updated, and Dr. Faraone serves as one of their expert advisors on ADHD and web content.
The website has a number of sections, including:
- An Adult ADHD Self-report Screening Scale for DSM-5 (ASRS-5)
- Free ADHD Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities
- ADHD Expert Perspectives on issues such as medication, co-morbidities, ADHD Treatment, and Younger ADHD folk.
- An ADHD Blog
They also have a ‘Commercial Corner’ on ADHD Brand Information, which is still under construction.
Dr. Faraone is dedicated to ongoing research on ADHD and the promotion of fact-based approaches to treatment and education worldwide. Dr. Faraone and Dr. Goodman work together as colleagues and are both committed to providing evidence-based information about ADHD to families and other healthcare providers. If you are a provider, I encourage you to review these resources as a helpful learning option that fits into your busy schedule and caseload as a timely and convenient way to stay current in the field of ADHD. And for those of us who have family members with ADHD, these resources provide us with timely evidence-based information that we may want to share with our providers or share with someone who is just beginning their lifelong journey into learning about ADHD.
